MUSIC ENSEMBLES

The music ensembles (one credit hour each semester) are regular University courses, open to all University students by audition. All attendance rules apply and grades are given. The ensembles may be taken for credit more than once, subject to the restrictions noted below. Where the number of enrollments is limited, the stated limit refers to the total allowable number of semesters including both 100- and 300-level courses.

*This ensemble meets from 4-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday throughout the fall. Students may miss one meeting per week due to class or lab conflict.

STUDIO (PRIVATE) INSTRUCTION

Weekly meeting times for studio instruction must be arranged with the instructor at 3:00 p.m. on the first day of classes of a semester.

Course numbers MUA 170 through MUA 189 and MUA 370 through MUA 389 denote private study of the principal instrument or voice for music majors; each course may be repeated for credit. Music majors should register for the principal applied instrument at the 100-level for two (2) credit hours during the first four semesters at the University. Following successful completion of the sophomore qualifying examination (MUA 199), students should register for the principal applied instrument at the 300-level for 2 credit hours. Weekly meeting times for studio instruction must be arranged with the instructor at 3:00 p.m. on the first day of classes of each semester.

MUE 107 Basic Skills in Music
Basic music-reading skills developed through singing and playing of instruments. The course is designed for the prospective elementary school teacher and is a prerequisite for MUE 385. Students with previous musical training may elect to demonstrate equivalent skills through testing.

MUE 251 Introduction to Winds, Strings, and Percussion
Group instruction in and exposure to techniques for working with wind, string, and percussion instruments. This survey course includes lecture, demonstration, and hands-on participation. Offered spring semester.

MUE 252 Teaching String and Percussion Instruments
Group instruction in and exposure to techniques of teaching and performing on string, and percussion instruments. This survey course includes lecture, demonstration, and hands-on participation. Offered spring semester.

MUE 350 Evaluation of Teaching and Learning in Music
Survey of standardized and non-standardized instruments and evaluation techniques in music education.

MUE 351 Teaching Flute and Single Reeds
Prerequisite: Admission to the teacher education program or permission of instructor. Instructional techniques and materials for teaching flute and single reeds. Offered fall semester.

MUE 352 Teaching Double Reeds
Prerequisite: Admission to the teacher education program. Instructional techniques and materials for teaching oboe and bassoon. Offered fall semester.

MUE 353 Teaching Brass Instruments
Prerequisite: Admission to the teacher education program or permission of the instructor. Designed to provide the instrumental music education major with skills necessary to teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced students of brass wind instruments. Offered spring semester.

MUE 354 Teaching Percussion II
Prerequisite: Admission to the teacher education program. Instructional techniques and materials for teaching intermediate and advanced players. Offered fall semester.

MUE 380 Vocal Methods
Prerequisite: Admission to the teacher education program. Corequisite: MUE 381. Examination of vocal pedagogy, diction, and solo vocal literature appropriate for teaching students in a public-school setting. Offered fall semester.

MUE 381 Vocal Methods Lab
Prerequisite: Admission to the teacher education program. Examination of the vocal instrument and teaching strategies for working with young voices. Offered fall semester.

MUE 385 Teaching Music in the Elementary School
Prerequisites: Minimum 2.5 GPA and MUE 107. Music curriculum in elementary schools and methods and techniques of teaching music in various grades are covered.

MUS 448. Teaching Instrumental Music in Public Schools
Prerequisites: BEP 305 and admission to the teacher education program. Problems encountered in the development of instrumental programs in public schools; analysis of beginning method books for heterogeneous and homogeneous groups; and development of a course of study to guide the new teacher. Offered fall semester.

MUE 387 The Elementary School Music Program
Prerequisites: BEP 305 and admission to the teacher education program. Comprehensive coverage of the music curriculum in the elementary school, including current methodologies. Teaching techniques and materials are demonstrated and applied in field experiences. Offered spring semester.

MUS 447 Teaching Choral Music in Public Schools
Prerequisites: BEP 305 and admission to the teacher education program. The scope, organization, and administration of choral programs in public schools. Includes analysis of teaching techniques and materials appropriate to specific levels of development. Offered fall semester.

MUE 389 Clinical Experience in Music Education
Campus- and field-based experiences in public-school music education at several levels. Microteaching and development of teaching techniques are included. Offered fall semester.

MUE 486 Marching Band Techniques
Fundamentals of marching, maneuvering, and preparation and presentation of formations. Offered fall semester and in summer term during odd-numbered years.

MUE 487 Evaluation of Teaching and Learning in Music
Prerequisites: MATH 100 or higher, BEP 305, and admission to the teacher education program. Survey of standardized instruments and evaluation techniques in music. Offered fall semester.

MUE 497 Internship in Music
Prerequisites: Senior standing, admission to the teacher education program, a minimum GPA of 2.75 for all work attempted, a minimum GPA of 2.75 in the major, completion of senior recital, completion of teaching methods courses in major, and passing piano proficiency. Full-time, supervised teaching experience in the area of specialization (instrumental or vocal), from nursery school through grade 12. Usually offered spring semester.

MUE 500 Foundations of Music Education
Investigation of the purposes and functions of music education from antiquity to the present. Philosophical foundations and a chronological survey of historical issues related to the inclusion of music in general education will also be discussed. Offered in summer school, in odd-numbered years, and at other times according to demand.

MUE 501 Functional Instruments
Studio instruction in secondary instruments or voice.

MUE 523 Current Trends in Elementary Music
Instructional materials, lesson planning, teaching practices and procedures, and the evaluation of pupil achievement. Offered in summer school only, in odd-numbered years.

MUE 525 Choral Techniques and Materials
\Organization, rehearsal, programming, and performance of choral groups. Offered in summer school only, in even-numbered years.

MUE 526 Instrumental Techniques and Materials
Organization, rehearsal, programming, and performance of instrumental groups. Offered in summer school only, in even-numbered years.

MUE 527 Selection, Care, and Repair of Instruments
Practice in repairs and adjustments normally made by instrumental directors. Offered in summer school only, in even-numbered years.

MUE 529 Research in Music Education
Research study in music education. Offered in summer school in even-numbered years, and at other times according to demand.

MUE 530 Music Education Curriculum Theory and Development
Analysis of music curricula and study of the development process. Offered in summer school in even-numbered years, and at other times according to demand.

MUE 590 Seminar in Music Education
S tudy of special topics in music education. Offered according to demand.

MUE 591 Workshop in Music Education
Special topics in music education focusing on in-class activities and materials directly applicable to general, band, and orchestra music instruction. Typically focused for practicing teachers, with the bulk of the expected work to be accomplished in class.

MUE 595 Curriculum Projects in Music Education
The design, proposal, implementation, evaluation, and reporting of a curriculum project or an improved instructional procedure in music. Independent study.

MUE 623 Curricular Trends in General Music Education
Prerequisite: MUE 523, MUE 530, MUE 630, or permission of the instructor. Analysis of current trends in general music and their influence on techniques and materials for K-12 and two-year community colleges. Offered according to demand.

MUE 630 Music Education Curriculum Theory and Development.
Prerequisite: Master's degree. Analysis of music curricula and study of the development process. Offered according to demand.

MUE 631 Music Education Curriculum Evaluation and Supervision.
Prerequisites: Master's degree, and MUE 530, MUE 630, or permission of the instructor. Study and application of observation and measurement tools, and the use of evaluation in leading curriculum change. Offered according to demand.

MUE 690 Advanced Seminar in Music Education
Advanced study of special topics in music education. Offered according to demand.
